Wendell McKines solid in PBA return, power Beermen to victory over Elite

Wendell McKines, who played for Rain of Shine two years ago, delivers a fine opening performance for San Miguel.
ANTIPOLO — San Miguel Beer took charge early and eased to victory over Blackwater, 118-93, to start the final phase of its grand slam bid on Saturday in the PBA Governors' Cup at the Ynares Center here.

Behind import Wendell McKines, June Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter, the Beermen built a 23-point lead at halftime and never looked back.

The three combined for 32 points in the first 24 minutes of action for the Beermen, while the Elite just couldn't find an answer and went on to absorb their third loss in as many games.

McKines had a solid play with 19 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in his first game in an SMB uniform, while Fajardo had 18 markers, eight boards, three assists and two steals.

The Beermen got ahead, 106-68, then sent in the reserves, including new acquisition Matt Ganueas-Rosser.

"I think this is our best start (coming off a championship). I'm proud of my players, despite the long break, yung iba extended pa, makikita mo pa rin na sharp sila," said San Miguel coach Leo Austria.

Lassiter made 5-of-7 shots from the three-point line and finished with 19 points.

Mike Digregorio paced the listless Elite with 18 points, while JP Erram and Roi Sumang chipped in 14 apiece.

The scores:

San Miguel 118 - Lassiter 19, McKines 19, Fajardo 18, Espinas 16, Santos 12, Cabagnot 8, Heruela 7, McCarthy 5, Ganuelas-Rosser 4, Tubid 3, Agovida 2, De Ocampo 2, Pessumal 2, Reyes 1, Ross 0, Semerad 0.

Beermen's biggest Grand Slam hurdle will be themselves says Arwind

According to Arwind Santos, the Beermen's biggest obstacle towards winning a Grand Slam will be themselves.
Arwind Santos knows how to stop a Grand Slam, he did it once before.

As the anchor of Petron, Santos was a big part of the Blaze Boosters' upset of Talk 'N Text in the 2011 Governors' Cup Finals, denying the Tropang Texters of a shot at immortality.

Six years later, with the San Miguel Beermen looking to complete a triple crown, Santos is trying his best to rally his teammates and avoid making the same mistake.

Because according to Arwind, the Beermen's biggest obstacle towards winning a Grand Slam will be themselves.

Not TNT, not Ginebra, not anybody else.

If San Miguel fails to complete the triple crown, it's on them.

"Ang lagi ko lang ire-remind sa kanila, pagkatapos ng lahat ng nangyari, successful na nangyari sa team namin, hindi tayo kayang sirain ng mga tao sa labas," Santos said Friday during the team's victory party to celebrate winning the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup.

"Kasi naniniwala ako na isa lang satin dito sa loob ang pwedeng makasira sa team natin. Kung sino man sa labas, hindi mangyayari yun kasi hindi naman nila handle kung ano nangyayari dito," he added, talking about his San Miguel team that has won five of the last eight PBA championships.

After going through countless high-pressure situations over the last three years, San Miguel's core is as solid as ever.

Arwind would like to keep it that way as the Beermen face perhaps their toughest challenge yet.

"Yung team namin, yung time element mas mahaba pa yung time na magkakasama tayo kesa sa pamilya natin. So wag sana natin kalimutan at hayaan masira ng isa satin dito na nasa loob," he said.

"Kailangan core tayo, solid tayo habang lalong tumatagal," Arwind added.

Chasing a Grand Sla, Santos said San Miguel needs to settle dow and not get consumed by the pressure.

As with their previous five titles together, Arwind said that the Beermen's first priority for the Governors' Cup is to actually make the playoffs and then go from there.

"One game at a time lang talaga. Ang target muna namin makapasok ng semis, yun lang muna. Hindi kami kailangan magmadali," he said. - ABS-CBN Sports

Rhodes comes through for local orphanage before leaving PH

Finally a pro champion, the man they call the Colossus went to the White Cross Orphanage in San Juan and treated the children to some food and cake.
Following a championship win in the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup, San Miguel import Charles Rhodes is leaving the country Friday night.

However, Rhodes' last few days in the Philippines were pretty busy as the towering import was on deck for two victory parties --- one on Wednesday and one on Friday --- on top of visiting a local orphanage.

Finally a pro champion, the man they call the Colossus went to the White Cross Orphanage in San Juan and treated the children to some food and cake.

Rhodes, who helped the Beermen win their first Commissioner's Cup title in 17 years by beating TNT KaTropa in the Finals, 4-2, said on his Instagram account that "words can't express the feeling" when he made the underprivileged kids happy.

Aside from treating everyone to a nice meal, Rhodes also made a donation to orphanage.

Rhodes was terrific for San Miguel all conference long, winning the Best Import award as well aside from the title.

Making an appearance at Robinson's Galleria Friday to meet Beermen fans, he thanked everyone for their continued support and expressed his desire to go for back-to-back championships next year. - ABS-CBN Sports

Von Pessumal on impending lack of playing time with SMB: ‘Okay lang basta manalo kami’

Sweet-shooting rookie Von Pessumal won’t mind losing ample playing minutes after being traded by GlobalPort to Grand Slam-seeking San Miguel Beer in exchange for seldom-used Arnold Van Opstal on Monday.

“I’m thankful for San Miguel ‘cause they had (showed) interest in me,” Pessumal said after attending Gilas’ practice on Monday. “I’m just excited to play for them, learn from the championship culture they have over there and see how we can help any way in practice and games, any way that they ask me, they want me to help out, I’ll help out in any way.”

The former Ateneo sharpshooter logged in an average of 15.2 minutes per game in his first two conferences with GlobalPort — an exposure he might not enjoy under head coach Leo Austria’s system.

“Whether I play one minute, I play two minutes, five minutes, ten, whatever. If I have to help out in practice and go hard in practice ok lang sa akin basta manalo kami. So good situation for me,” he stressed. – FOX Sports Asia

San Miguel wins 24th PBA title after Game 6 demolition of TNT

Arwind Santos and the San Miguel Beermen dropped the hammer on TNT in Game 6 of the 2017 Commissioner's Cup Finals to win a 24th PBA championship.

It appears that there's no end in sight yet for this current San Miguel dynasty.

The Beermen won their second straight championship this season, vanquishing the TNT KaTropa, 115-91, in Game 6 of the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals Sunday at the Big Dome.

Dominating the clincher, the 4-2 series win marked San Miguel's first title in this tournament since 2000. The Beermen also remain on track for a Grand Slam after previously capturing the Philippine Cup last March.

With their conference on the line, the KaTropa played the Beermen tough to start Game 6, however, an incident involving the Semerad twins doomed TNT, turning the momentum in favoor of San Miguel.

After TNT's Anthony and San Miguel's David got entangled on a play near the halfway point of the first quarter, a mini commotion sparked anew causing officials to hand out 11 technical fouls, six for the KaTropa and five for the Beermen.

TNT was still leading at that time but once the dust settled after all the technical fouls, San Miguel went on a game-changing run that practically won the title.

The Beermen opened up a double-digit lead to finish the opening quarter and then dropped the hammer in the second to take a commanding 20-point lead at the break, 62-42.

TNT went on a 9-0 run to get to within 12, 55-68, early in the second half but Marcio Lassiter came through for the Beermen, scoring 14 points in the third period alone to keep San Miguel's imposing advantage.

San Miguel was on cruise control in the fourth as the team won its 24th PBA title, most in league history.

"I would like to congratulate coach Nash Racela and the entire TNT organization for bringing out the best in us," winning head coach Leo Austria said, making sure to give props to the team that gave them problems all series long.

"Both of us deserved to win the championship but we're really fortunate because my players really wanted to win. This is the cup that we didn't win in the last 17 years and they have something in their minds that's why this game is really fantastic for them," he added.

Import Charles Rhodes, who won his first-ever pro title, led the Beermen with 30 points, 14 in the first, on top of 11 rebounds. Marcio Lassiter added 24 while Arwind Santos was good for 17 points off the bench.

Finals MVP Alex Cabagnot became the first local player in 12 years to post a triple-double in the Finals, going for 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Troy Rosario was the high man for TNT, finishing with 21 points while rookie RR Pogoy dropped 16. Joshua Smith scored 15 for the KaTropa and Jayson Castro added 13.

The scores:

SAN MIGUEL 115 - Rhodes 30, Lassiter 24, Cabagnot 19, Santos 17, Ross 14, Espinas 5, Semerad 4, Fajardo 2, De Ocampo 0, Heruela 0, McCarthy 0, Van Opstal 0, Agovida. 0,

TNT 91 - Rosario 21, Pogoy 16, Smith 15, Castro 13, De Ocampo 7, Garcia 7, Williams 4, Tautuaa 4, Rosales 2, Semerad 2, Reyes 0.

Quarterscores: 37-26, 62-42, 94-69, 115-91.

Chot Reyes admits grand slam-seeking SMB 'unbeatable' when playing at its best

Coach Chot Reyes admits grand slam-seeking SMB 'unbeatable' when playing at its best
ONLY one conference separates the current batch of San Miguel Beermen from basketball immortality.

After ruling the first two tournaments of this PBA season, most recently the Commissioner’s Cup, the Beermen are on the cusp of capturing their second grand slam in franchise history.

Can anyone stop them from achieving the rare feat in the Governors’ Cup?

We asked two multi-titled PBA coaches on which team, or teams, they think can deny the Beermen in their bid to become only the second team in league history to win the Triple Crown twice after Crispa.

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes, however, admitted that the grand slam is for the Beermen to win or lose.

“Honestly, I don’t think there’s any one team who can beat San Miguel if they’re playing at their best,” the eight-time PBA champion coach said. “That’s how good that team is. I think the only team that can stop San Miguel is themselves.”

Reyes, winner of nine PBA championships and a five-time Coach of the Year awardee, points to the current Beermen's 'great chemistry' when asked what separates this team from the rest in the league.

“It’s not only a question of talent or depth, but it’s a combination of great coaching and great chemistry,” he added. “They have a group of players who know how to play with each other – that’s very important.”

Reyes said there are “some teams with the same talent level and depth of the Beermen,” but they don’t have the same cohesion as San Miguel’s flagship franchise has.

“They don’t have the kind of understanding and knowledge on how to play with each other that San Miguel has,” the Gilas coach said.

Asked which teams can at least stand toe to toe with the Beermen, Reyes declined to name a specific team, but cited the import will prove to be a major factor.

“The only team I think that will have a chance is the team that will have a super import, and it’s too early to tell now how the imports will fare,” Reyes said. “It remains to be seen.”

Jong Uichico, who owns the fifth-most PBA championships among coaches with eight titles under his belt, echoed Reyes’s sentiment, saying the chances of a team spoiling the SMB party depends on its import.

The national team deputy coach, though, rattled off the four teams that he feels have a shot at stopping the Beermen - a team, by the way, that he led to six league championships.

Here's why.

GINEBRA

One club that has the chemistry and is blessed with a super import is the Ginebra, which is defending its title behind returning import Justin Brownlee.

The Gin Kings gained even extra cohesion with the do-it-all reinforcement by also fielding him in the Commissioner’s Cup where the 6-foot-5 forward stood tall in a conference with a 6-foot-10 import height limit, averaging 28.3 points, spiked by 2.7 triples, along with 11.1 boards, 5.1 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.9 blocks in 38.8 minutes in the eliminations.

“They made it to the semis (in the Commissioner’s Cup) with Brownlee, so what more in a six-five (import height limit) conference, ‘di ba?” Uichico said.

If that’s enough to make their case, the Gin Kings are also parading fit-again Greg Slaughter, who’s expected to provide inside presence as well as flash his newfound three-point shooting touch.

TNT KATROPA

The Texters definitely can’t wait to take a crack again at San Miguel after the Beermen clinched the midseason tournament at their expense in the finals.

And they have the tools and a similar powerhouse lineup with a mixture of veterans and young guns to do so.

TNT is also fielding a wide-bodied, yet deceivingly quick reinforcement in Michael Craig, who coach Nash Racela said can play all five positions.

“Talk ‘N Text will always be there (as a threat to SMB),” Uichico said.

MERALCO

Recent history suggests the Bolts always save their best for last, peaking in the Governors’ Cup, considering they reached the finals of last year’s edition just two conferences after finishing dead last in the all-Filipino conference.

The Bolts had a similar start this season, ending up second to last spot in the Philippine Cup, before barely missing a semifinal spot in the recently concluded Commissioner’s Cup, dragging eventual finalist TNT KaTropa to the limit in the best-of-three quarterfinal series.

After falling short in the Governors’ Cup Finals against Ginebra last year, the Bolts try to get over the hump this time and challenge San Miguel Beer in its quest for greatness behind returning Best Import Allen Durham.

“Meralco didn’t make it to the semis, but they’re still a Top Five team,” Uichico said.

STAR

The Hotshots are another squad seeking to get a shot at San Miguel Beer again after they lost to the Beermen, 3-1 in the Commissioner’s Cup semifinals.

Coach Chito Victolero has a promising, young roster that’s starting to mature, as evidenced by its win against the Beermen in Game One of the Final Four, before they lost their next three games as the absence of veteran big man Marc Pingris took its toll.

The Hotshots are fielding a new, untested import in Cinmeon Bowers, a burly slotman who the Hotshots are hoping can match up well with SMB’s own undersized – but already proven – big man in Wendell McKines.

“Alam natin yung kalibre ni McKines, so we know he’ll be a good fit for San Miguel, so depende na dun sa import ng mga ibang team,” Uichico said. - SPIN
